SAMPLE POTS
Choosing the right shade is one of the most important steps in your project, and we are here to make it as easy as possible.
How we perceive colour is determined by light, which is why a shade can look quite different in person compared to how it appears on a screen or in an image. This is particularly true with limewash, as it refracts light more than conventional paints and this is a large part of what makes it so uniquely beautiful. Colours can shift depending on the time of day, the direction of natural light, and whether the space is indoors or outdoors. For this reason, we always recommend viewing your chosen shade in the actual space you intend to paint.
The best way to find your perfect shade is to try one of our sample pots. We offer sample pots across our entire collection, and each contains 200ml of the exact same paint and formula as your main order.
No, the Prep Coat is not essential at the sampling stage. This is simply about seeing how the colour looks and feels in your space.
We always recommend testing your sample pot on a clean, white matt surface, ideally directly onto the wall or area you intend to limewash. This will give you the truest sense of how the finished colour will look in your specific space and lighting conditions.
When applying your sample, try using organic, natural shapes rather than painting a neat square, this will give you a much more authentic feel for the finished limewash effect. Apply two coats to allow the true colour to fully develop.
limewash Paint
Our limewash is not just another wall coating , it is a completely different approach to decorating.
Unlike conventional emulsion paints, which typically contain synthetic binders, plastics, and VOCs, our limewash is made from all-natural lime with no harmful chemicals. Rather than sitting on the surface like standard paint, it penetrates and bonds directly with the wall, creating a naturally breathable finish that allows moisture to escape and helps prevent mould.
The result is a soft, matt texture with beautiful natural colour variation that simply cannot be replicated by synthetic paints. And unlike conventional coatings that deteriorate over time, limewash only grows stronger and more characterful with age.
Our limewash is proudly made in Britain. We are based in Marden, a charming village nestled in the heart of the Kent countryside , surrounded by rolling fields, orchards, and everything that makes the Garden of England so special. It is a fitting home for a paint brand rooted in nature.
We are excited to share that our showroom is currently under construction and will be open to the public from the end of June. We look forward to welcoming you!
Using a natural bristle block brush, apply the limewash with long, sweeping brush strokes and a light touch, avoid overworking the surface. We recommend 2–3 coats depending on the texture you wish to achieve.
Avoid using short, criss-cross brush strokes (commonly seen on social media, mimicking emulsion paint), as this is not suitable for our limewash application. Our paint is a natural, water-based limewash, and with the correct application technique, you can achieve the authentic texture limewash is known for.

Its take anywhere from 48 hours to 2 weeks to fully cure the limewash. This varies each for each wall, shade you applied, number of coats and preparation taken prior to application. .
For best results, allow 2–3 hours between coats. Where possible, leaving the paint to dry overnight is ideal.
If you are applying a Top Coat, ensure the limewash has been left for at least 48 hours before application.
Yes. Our block brush is made with natural bristles and densely filled for high water absorption, allowing you to pick up and apply thicker coats of paint than a standard brush. This ensures optimal coverage and helps you achieve an authentic limewash finish.
It’s best to use the limewash we provide within 7 weeks to avoid any colour changes, as this is a natural limewash and is quite sensitive to environmental conditions
Yes, limewash is well suited to humid environments. Our paint contains no plastics or synthetic coatings, making it naturally breathable, mould-resistant, and anti-bacterial.
It can be applied to all walls and ceilings throughout the bathroom, with the exception of areas in direct contact with water, such as inside shower enclosures.
Preparation is the most important step, particularly in bathrooms where walls are often previously painted with latex or plastic-based products. These create a non-porous barrier that needs to be properly addressed before our paint can be applied. We recommend applying a water-based primer first to create a stable, absorbent base before using our Prep Coat, skipping this step is the most common cause of unsatisfactory results.
As our paint is a natural, water-based limewash with no plastic coating, it behaves differently to standard emulsion, so it is not wipeable as with paints that contain plastic coatings. It can be gently wiped with a barely damp cloth for light marks, however we recommend avoiding harsh cleaning products or excessive moisture as this may affect the finish.
Yes , our limewash is suitable for both interior and exterior use. Limewash has been used on external surfaces for centuries and is particularly well suited to traditional and period properties.
Timing is important when working externally. We recommend choosing a period of at least two consecutive dry days to allow the limewash to properly harden and reduce the risk of water damage before it has fully cured.
Surface preparation is essential for external application. Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free from any loose or flaking material before applying our Prep Coat.
For added protection against the elements, applying our Top Coat as a weather shield is a great option, helping to extend the life of your finish and maintain its appearance over time.
As our paint is natural and breathable, it will weather beautifully over time, developing a natural patina that adds character and charm to any exterior surface.

Prep Coat
Yes, the Prep Coat is an essential step and we always recommend applying it before your limewash on almost all surfaces.
Our Prep Coat creates a mineral base layer that allows the limewash to cure correctly, bringing out its full depth of colour and texture. It also acts as an adhesive layer, ensuring our water-based limewash bonds properly to the surface, and significantly improves the durability of the finished result. Unlike a traditional primer, our Prep Coat has a low opacity and is not designed to cover or conceal the surface, it dries to a white matt finish, preparing the wall specifically for limewash application.
Allow the Prep Coat to dry fully for 2–3 hours before applying your limewash. In colder conditions, this may take longer.
Skipping the Prep Coat may affect the quality and longevity of your finish, so it is a step we always recommend. It can be easily applied using a standard roller.
One coat of Prep Coat is sufficient. We recommend applying it with a foam roller, as this leaves a slight texture on the surface that creates the ideal base for the limewash to bond to and absorb into.
Our Prep Coat is simple to apply using a standard roller. For best results, we recommend using a foam roller, as this creates a slightly textured surface with small air pockets that allow the limewash to absorb more effectively and bond to the wall.
Apply one even coat and allow it to fully dry before applying your limewash.
No, the Prep Coat must not be applied directly to fresh plaster. As our Prep Coat is not a primer and has a low opacity, it is not designed to seal or stabilise a fresh plaster surface.
Fresh plaster must be fully dried and cured before any application. We recommend applying a water-based matt white primer first to create a stable, even base before applying the Prep Coat.
Our Prep Coat covers approximately 8m² per litre. As a general guide, 2L of Prep Coat is sufficient for use alongside 2.5L of limewash.
Unlike conventional emulsion paints, our products contain no preservatives or synthetic additives and we believe that is something to be celebrated. However, it does mean our paints have a naturally shorter shelf life than standard alternatives.
For the best results, we recommend using the Prep Coat within 7 weeks of purchase. The same applies to our limewash the fresher it is, the better the finish.
To maximise the shelf life of your products, please ensure they are stored in a cool, dry place at a temperature above 5°C, with the container kept fully sealed when not in use.
No, our Prep Coat is not a primer. It is specially designed to act as an adhesive bridge coat, ensuring the limewash bonds properly to the surface. Due to its low opacity, it is not intended to cover or conceal the surface like a traditional primer would.
If your walls require priming, please ensure this is done beforehand using a water-based matt white primer before applying the Prep Coat.
Yes, we believe Dulux Super Matt, Macpherson Eclipse Contract Matt, and Armstead Trade Contract Matt are the best options for our prep coat, as it is a mineral coating and requires a surface that provides good adhesion.
Top coat
The Top Coat is optional, but we do recommend it in certain situations. For commercial projects, we recommend applying a Top Coat due to high traffic, frequent contact with walls, and general wear. It is also a great choice for wet rooms or any area where occasional water splashes are likely.
For standard residential walls in low-traffic areas, the Top Coat is not essential but can be applied for added peace of mind.
Our Top Coat provides additional protection against rubbing, splashes, and everyday wear, while maintaining a matt finish that will not noticeably alter the colour or appearance of your limewash.
It is worth noting that our Top Coat is 100% natural, containing no plastic coatings or added preservatives. As a result, it has a shorter shelf life than conventional sealers and should be used within 14 days of purchase.
Allow the limewash to fully dry for a minimum of 48 hours before applying the Top Coat.
Using a completely dry brush (a nylon brush works well for this), apply a thin coat with a light, gentle touch. Avoid pressing too hard or overbrushing, as the Top Coat has a wet, jelly-like consistency that can lift the limewash from the surface if applied with too much pressure.
Coverage Guide:
Each wall and shade can behave differently, but the following is based on tried and tested guidance.
For darker colours, we recommend 6L of limewash for a standard twin room, or alternatively 3L per 20 sqm.
For lighter colours: 5L for a standard twin room, and approximately 17 sqm coverage for each 2.5L tin.
Always get half the amount of limewash volume for the prep coat. Usually, one 2.5L tin covers around 25–30 sqm.
Top coat: 2.5L should cover up to 40 sqm.
