Natural Mineral Limewash – Product Information

DESCRIPTION

Our mineral limewash is a natural blend of high-quality matured lime putty and water – nothing more. It’s free from linseed oil and synthetic additives, making it a truly breathable and eco-friendly finish for your walls.

This limewash is designed to work with the building – not against it – by allowing moisture to pass through, helping to maintain a healthy, dry structure.

RECOMMENDED SURFACES

This product is ideal for use on:

  • New lime render

  • New lime plaster

  • Previously limewashed surfaces

Note: If you wish to apply this limewash on less porous or previously painted surfaces (like emulsion or rubber-based paints), we recommend first applying a mineral-based prepcoat to promote adhesion / absorption. 

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

1. Surface Preparation
Ensure the surface is clean and free of dust, dirt, lichen, or loose material. If there is mould, treat with anti-fungal spray and clean it dry. 

2. Damping the Surface
Before each coat, lightly dampen the surface with clean water. This controls suction and helps reduce cracking or dusting.

3. First Coat
Stir the limewash thoroughly before use. Apply using a large emulsion or masonry brush in thin, even layers. It will appear translucent when wet but will dry to a soft, matte, opaque finish.

Tip: Coloured limewash dries lighter than it appears when wet.

4. Subsequent Coats
Allow each coat to dry and cure for around 24 hours. Apply additional coats following the same method. Protect exterior walls from rain and rapid drying (e.g. direct sun or wind). Slow curing results in a stronger, more durable finish.

Suggested Coats:

  • 4 coats on new exterior lime render

  • 3 coats on new interior lime plaster

  • 2–3 coats on previously limewashed surfaces

FROST WARNING
Do not apply in temperatures below 5 °C or when frost is expected.

COVERAGE

One 3-litre tin of our limewash will comfortably cover a standard wall measuring 10ft x 10ft (approximately 9.3m²) with two full coats. Limewash is designed to build up in translucent layers, so applying two thin coats ensures better depth, texture, and durability. Coverage may vary slightly depending on the porosity of the surface — more absorbent walls may take up a bit more. For best results, apply with a wide brush in sweeping, crisscross motions.

APPLICATION TIPS TO AVOID ISSUES

  • Do not apply thickly – limewash should always go on as a thin wash.

  • Always dampen surfaces to regulate suction.

  • Let each coat dry thoroughly before adding the next.

  • Protect the surface from rapid drying or extreme weather conditions.

  • Use only on suitably porous surfaces unless a mineral primer is used.
