Designed to breathe with your walls, our Prep Coat balances texture and tone, the natural way to prepare for limewash.

What Is Prep Coat and What Does It Do?

Our Prep Coat is a specially formulated base layer designed to help limewash paint perform beautifully on modern walls. It creates the ideal surface for limewash to bond, breathe, and reveal its natural texture.

Unlike regular paints, limewash doesn’t adhere well to emulsion or plastic-based finishes , that’s where Prep Coat comes in. It acts as the bridge between your existing wall and the limewash, ensuring smooth application, even coverage, and a lasting, authentic finish.

Our limewash.com Prep Coat is 100% VOC-free, breathable, and made without plastic, crafted with the same purity and care as our limewash paints. Remember, our mantra: Preparation is the foundation of a beautifully imperfect limewash finish.

Should I use Prep Coat if my walls are already painted with white matte emulsion?

Yes, even if your walls are matte white, emulsion paint won’t hold our limewash properly. Our Prep Coat is essential for creating the right surface, allowing the limewash to bond and breathe as it should.

Can I use Prep Coat on wood surfaces before applying limewash?

Yes, you can. If you’re planning to limewash a wood surface, our Prep Coat will help create the right foundation. We highly recommend applying at least two coats of primer first and ensuring the surface is clean, dry, and properly prepared before using limewash.com Prep Coat. This will help the limewash adhere evenly and achieve a beautifully natural finish.

Can I use Prep Coat on new plaster?

Yes, you can use our Prep Coat on new plaster, depending on the limewash colour you’ve chosen and the look you’re aiming for. Newly plastered walls often have a soft pink or beige tone, and because our Prep Coat is water-based and plastic-free, it does not act as a colour corrector or traditional primer.

If you’re planning to use a light limewash shade, we recommend applying a good-quality primer first to even out the surface and cover any marks or stains. For darker limewash colours, applying our Prep Coat directly to the cured plaster usually works beautifully.

If you’re unsure which approach is right for your walls, our team is always happy to help, just get in touch for personalised advice.

How many coats of Prep Coat do I need, and how should I apply it?

We recommend applying one to two coats, depending on your surface. If your wall is already primed with a matte finish, one coat is usually enough. You can apply Prep Coat using either a brush or roller, depending on your preference , but here’s a little tip: if you’re aiming for more texture and movement in your limewash finish, use a brush. It will help create the soft, organic character that limewash is known for.

Is Prep Coat suitable for exterior walls?

No ,our Prep Coat is formulated for interior use only. Exterior surfaces require a different preparation system to withstand outdoor conditions.

Is Prep Coat eco-friendly?

Yes. Our Prep Coat is 100% VOC-free, breathable, and made without plastic or harmful chemicals, designed with the same purity and care as our limewash paints.

How long should I wait before applying limewash?

Allow the Prep Coat to dry completely, typically around 2-3 hours, depending on room temperature and ventilation, before applying our limewash paint.
