LIMEWASH TROUBLESHOOTING
Natural limewash creates beautiful depth, movement and texture. Every wall is unique, but unwanted marks or application problems can usually be traced to surface preparation, drying conditions or application technique. Explore our practical guide to identifying and resolving common limewash issues.
COMMON APPLICATION ISSUES
Select a topic to understand the cause and recommended solution.
01 VISIBLE LINES OR GHOSTING +
Visible lines, straight edges or ghosting can appear where adjoining sections of limewash have dried at different rates, or where an area has been repeatedly brushed after it has started to dry.
HOW TO RESOLVE
- Allow the entire wall to dry fully before assessing the finish.
- If this is the first coat, proceed with the second coat using consistent, overlapping brush movements.
- Maintain a wet working edge and blend adjoining sections while the limewash is still workable.
- If lines remain after the completed second coat, assess whether a full-wall reapplication is required. Avoid isolated patches that may leave visible boundaries.
02 PATCHY OR UNEVEN FINISH +
Limewash is naturally tonal. Soft clouds and variations are part of its character. However, strongly defined patches, hard edges or unusually uneven areas can indicate inconsistent preparation, mixing or application.
HOW TO RESOLVE
- Allow the wall to dry completely. Wet limewash can look dramatically different from its finished appearance.
- Check that the surface was prepared consistently and that Mineral Bond Prep Coat was used.
- If only the first coat has been applied, complete the second coat with long, controlled blending movements.
- If the completed finish remains unacceptable, consider re-preparing the entire affected wall rather than repeatedly adding limewash.
03 POWDERY OR CHALKY SURFACE +
Limewash is a mineral-based finish and may exhibit some chalkiness. Excessive powdering, however, should be investigated before any protective treatment is applied.
HOW TO RESOLVE
- Allow sufficient curing time, typically 5–15 days depending on the conditions.
- Assess whether the surface has minor chalk transfer or significant loose material.
- Check for over-dilution, unsuitable substrates or inadequate preparation.
- For a sound, fully cured finish, consider our breathable Top Coat to help reduce chalk transfer.
- If the finish is excessively loose or failing, contact our technical team before sealing. Re-preparation may be necessary.
04 BUBBLING OR BLISTERING +
Bubbling may occur when moisture, poor adhesion or an unstable underlying coating interferes with the application. The underlying cause should be identified before attempting repairs.
HOW TO RESOLVE
- Stop applying further coats to the affected area.
- Allow the wall to dry and check for leaks, dampness or condensation.
- Remove loose or blistered material and repair the underlying surface.
- Ensure the substrate is sound, dry and suitable for painting.
- Apply the appropriate white matte primer where required, followed by Mineral Bond Prep Coat.
- Once the preparation system has dried correctly, reapply two coats of limewash.
05 WHITE PATCHES OR PALE MARKS +
Unwanted pale areas may be associated with uneven absorption, inconsistent pigment distribution, excess material or mineral deposits. The appearance alone is not enough to identify the cause.
HOW TO RESOLVE
- Allow the surface to dry completely before assessing the marks.
- Check whether the patches are part of the natural tonal variation or are distinct surface defects.
- Confirm that the limewash was thoroughly mixed and stirred frequently during application.
- Check for moisture or mineral deposits originating from the substrate.
- If patches remain after the second coat, seek technical guidance before applying additional material. Re-preparation may be necessary.
06 BRUSH MARKS OR RAPID DRYING +
Distinct brush marks can occur when the paint is overworked, the wall absorbs moisture too quickly, or the application is interrupted. Warm, dry or draughty conditions can shorten working time.
HOW TO RESOLVE
- Check that Mineral Bond Prep Coat has been applied to create a consistent application surface.
- Use a suitable limewash brush rather than a conventional roller.
- Load the brush consistently and work in manageable sections.
- Use the recommended first-coat texture technique and longer blending movements for the second coat.
- Do not repeatedly brush an area once drying has started.
- Avoid direct heat, strong draughts and direct sunlight during application.
GENERAL LIMEWASH QUESTIONS
Understanding how natural mineral paint behaves.
07 WHY DOES THE COLOUR LOOK DIFFERENT WHEN WET? +
Limewash generally appears darker when wet and becomes lighter as the water evaporates. Natural mineral pigments and the texture of the surface also influence the final appearance.
Always allow a sample to dry fully before assessing its colour. Test samples on a consistent white matte surface under the lighting conditions of the intended room.
08 WHY IS MY LIMEWASH SO WATERY? +
Our limewash is deliberately fluid. It is not designed to have the thick consistency of conventional emulsion paint.
- Mix thoroughly before application using an appropriate paint whisk or mixer.
- Continue stirring every 2–3 minutes to keep the mineral pigments evenly distributed.
- Apply with a suitable limewash brush using controlled movements.
- Do not add thickening agents or alter the formulation.
09 CAN I TOUCH UP A SMALL AREA? +
Touch-ups can be more visible with limewash than with conventional paint because each application creates a unique mineral pattern.
Small marks may sometimes be softened with careful blending. However, large or obvious defects often require treatment across the full wall to avoid visible edges.
We recommend sharing photographs with our technical team before attempting extensive repairs.
10 CAN I ADD WATER TO LEFTOVER LIMEWASH? +
We do not recommend adding water or other ingredients without specific technical guidance. Doing so may affect the colour, consistency and performance of the finish.
Keep the container properly sealed, follow the storage instructions on the product and use it within the stated shelf-life. If the product has separated, mix thoroughly and check its condition before use.
11 WILL ANOTHER TIN MATCH MY EXISTING WALL? +
Natural mineral pigments, application methods, substrate conditions and lighting can all influence the perceived finish.
For the most consistent result, calculate the required quantity before starting. Where compatible tins of the same shade are intended for one continuous area, mix their contents together thoroughly before application.
For a later repair, test the new material before applying it to a prominent area.
12 CAN LIMEWASH BE USED IN BATHROOMS? +
Limewash may be suitable for bathroom walls outside direct wet areas, provided the surface is correctly prepared and the room has appropriate ventilation.
Do not apply directly inside showers or to areas subject to repeated water contact.
If mould is present, address the underlying moisture issue and treat the affected surface before decorating. Limewash is not a remedy for active dampness or inadequate ventilation.
