Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use limewash.com limewash paint on walls that have previously been painted with emulsion?

Yes, you can use our limewash.com paint on walls that have been previously painted with emulsion. The key step is to properly prepare your walls before applying the limewash. Start by checking the condition of the surface, if there are stains, damp patches, or areas that need colour correction, these must be treated first. In such cases, a primer is required to fix the problem before moving ahead with limewashing.

A common question we receive is: Can I apply limewash.com paint over matt emulsion? The answer is yes, provided the emulsion is a white matt finish and the walls are in good condition without the issues mentioned above. In this situation, you can use our limewash.com Prep Coat as the base layer.

It’s important to note that our Prep Coat is not a primer. Instead, it acts as a binder that creates the perfect surface for limewash to adhere to. Since it is a water-based, VOC-free paint, the Prep Coat only works effectively on matt surfaces, not silk, satin, or gloss finishes.

By ensuring your walls are properly prepared and using the right base, you’ll get the best possible results with limewash.com paint.

Why is limewash.com limewash paint watery and thin?

Our limewash paints are 100% VOC-free and made with natural ingredients such as chalk, clay, and minerals. This makes our paint completely plastic-free and water-based. When applied, it is easily absorbed into the surface, becoming part of the wall itself. The result is a beautiful, breathable finish that allows the walls to “breathe” naturally.

Why are the pigments settling at the bottom of my limewash paint container?

Pigments naturally settle at the bottom of the container because our limewash paint is made with mineral-based ingredients and contains no synthetic binders or plastics to keep the pigments suspended. This is a normal characteristic of authentic limewash.

Before using, simply stir the paint thoroughly to redistribute the pigments evenly. Once applied, the pigments bind into the surface as the lime cures, creating a durable and natural finish.

Do I need the limewash.com professional block brush to apply limewash paint?

Yes, we recommend investing in the limewash.com block brush. Our brush is specially designed with a blend of natural and synthetic bristles that absorb our water-based paint and ensure a smooth, even application.

Why do the colours on the limewash.com site look different from the actual colours on my limewashed wall?

Our paints are made with natural pigments and minerals, which react uniquely to light and create subtle variations. This is part of what makes limewash so special compared to conventional paints. In addition, the way colors appear on screens can vary depending on the device (desktop, phone, or tablet), the brand, and individual screen settings. We work hard to ensure our images are as accurate as possible, and so far, we’ve found that iPhone displays give the closest match to the true colors.

What is the drying time between coats?

For limewash paint, it typically takes 2–3 hours to dry between coats. If you have time, we recommend leaving it overnight for the best results.

The paint will take about 2 weeks to fully cure. During this curing period, it’s important to let your walls “heal” naturally, void rubbing or touching the surface, as this may leave marks.

How do I find the perfect limewash colour?

We understand that choosing colours can be both exciting and overwhelming. The best way to decide is to narrow down your preferred shades and test them using our sample pots. We offer 200ml sample pots in every colour.

When testing, apply the paint in both a darker corner and a lighter corner of your space to see how the shade reacts to different lighting. Limewash paints respond uniquely and beautifully to light.

Can I use limewash.com paint in my barthroom?

You can absolutely limewash your bathroom, in fact, it’s one of the best places to use it. With just a little preparation, you’ll be ready to transform your space. Most bathroom walls are coated with waterproof emulsion, so if you haven’t sanded them down, we recommend starting with a matt primer. If your walls have a sheen finish, you’ll need at least two coats of primer for the best results.
Once primed, simply apply our Prep Coat and you’ll have the perfect surface for your limewash finish.

Our paint doesn’t just cope with humidity, it thrives in it. Unlike ordinary finishes, limewash is non-film-forming, which means it won’t blister or peel, even in the steamiest conditions. It’s also naturally antibacterial and mould-resistant, making it as practical as it is beautiful.
