Charleston Limewash was created in Charleston, South Carolina eleven years ago by two great friends: Bernard Kruseman-Aretz & David Hueske. Bernard, an ex-professional sailor, came to the US from Holland to study the arts at the University of South Carolina, bringing a passion for limewash's ancient history & a natural talent for color matching. He used his Masters of Arts degree, from USC, to become a Professor of Fine Arts. David, a true artisan in ornamental plaster, grew up in the Piedmont Mountains of North Carolina. It was at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill that his passion for preservation & natural building arts began.
They saw that although limewash was easily accessible in Europe & the surrounding areas, there was very little in the way of truly natural finishes in the United States. Their mission was to create premium lime finishes using traditional recipes, without all the fillers & chemicals common in today's commercial coverings. So they got to work making their own. The product inspired by this project is what prompted them to start Charleston Limewash.
Our batches are made by hand using quality quicklime to ensure you receive only the purest product. We then dye each order individually using natural pigments from the earth. Their versatility, durability, & easy application enables you to enhance & protect all aspects of your building; from the floors of your New York apartment, to the walls of your historic home, to the furniture in your rustic beach cottage. The only thing that you will miss is the worry of peeling, chipping, & unnecessary chemicals.
The purpose of our small creative support team at Charleston Limewash is to bring you the most innovative & genuine lime finishes. We're here to help you with any of your questions or concerns and look forward to you visiting us at www.limewash.com.
